Coropuna is the highest Vulcano in Arequipa and the third highest summit in Peru, after Huascaran (Cordillera Blanca, or “white mountain range”) and Yerupaja (Huayhuash mountain range). The first person to summit Coropuna was Hiram Bingham in 1911, the same person that re-discovered Machu Picchu.

Itinerary:

= Tent     = Breakfast     = Lunch     = Dinner

  Day 1:   Arequipa - Pallarcocha
In the morning we pick you up from your hotel. After a ride of about 9 hours we arrive at Pallarcocha, 270 km. from Arequipa. Here at an altitude of 4700 m we install our base camp at the side of the lake.

Day 2:   Pallarcocha - high camp
Today we start walking on the dusty trail until getting on the glacier. From there we pass several crevasses before coming to the high camp at 6.000 m altitude where we install our tents.

Day 3:   High camp - Pallarcocha - Arequipa
At 03.00 a.m. we will wake up and start our climb to the summit. After summiting and returning to our initial base camp at Pallarcocha, our transport takes us back to Arequipa.

Clasification: Moderate - difficult
Altitude: 6425m.

Coropuna’s difficulty is not due to technical climbing, but because of its altitude.

The best time to climb in the Arequipa region is between April and September, during the Andean summer.
During the rest of the year, it is also possible to climb, but it is more likely to have some bad weather.
